Team Asobi, the developer behind the upcoming Astro Bot 3D platformer, has revealed an unexpected development in the game's design process. While the final product leans heavily into a level-based structure, the studio initially explored the possibility of an open-world approach.
The announcement of a full-fledged Astro Bot game was met with enthusiasm from fans, as the series had previously been confined to tech demos and pack-in titles. This new entry promises to deliver a captivating platforming experience that pays homage to PlayStation's rich history while carving out a unique identity.
While the decision to opt for a level-based structure might seem obvious in hindsight, it wasn't a foregone conclusion. Astro Bot creative director Nicholas Doucet shared in an interview with Edge Magazine that an open-world concept was considered during early development. However, the team ultimately determined that a level-based approach would provide greater control over the game's variety and overall experience. With over 80 levels planned, Astro Bot boasts an impressive scope within its chosen format.
Given the series' history and the positive reception to previous level-based titles, Team Asobi's decision appears to have been a wise one. The studio's focus on delivering a fun and accessible platforming experience aligns perfectly with the core appeal of the Astro Bot franchise.
