Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has revealed that they considered developing a Fallout game before securing the Baldur's Gate license. The studio's CEO, Swen Vincke, shared this information in a recent interview.
Initially, Larian approached Wizards of the Coast about acquiring the Baldur's Gate license in 2014, following the success of Divinity: Original Sin. However, their initial proposal was declined due to concerns about the studio's perceived lack of experience. Undeterred, Larian focused on developing Divinity: Original Sin 2, which ultimately impressed Wizards of the Coast enough to offer them the Baldur's Gate license in late 2016.
Recognizing the potential challenges of securing such a high-profile license, Larian had explored other options. Vincke mentioned Fallout and Ultima as potential targets, both renowned RPG franchises capable of elevating the studio's industry standing. Fortunately for fans of both Larian and Dungeons & Dragons, the Baldur's Gate license materialized, leading to the development of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3.
