Sega Files Trademark for "Yakuza Wars," Hinting at New Game

Sega recently made public a trademark filing for "Yakuza Wars," sparking speculation about a new game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Sega’s subsidiary known for the Yakuza series. The studio's last release was "Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth" in January of this year. Given the studio's track record of releasing a new Yakuza game or remake almost annually, it's not surprising that they may already be gearing up for a 2025 release.

Sega is clearly committed to expanding the Yakuza franchise, now also recognized as "Like a Dragon." In June, a Like a Dragon: Yakuza TV series was announced, set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 25. The series will feature Kazuma Kiryu, the original protagonist of the Yakuza games, across six episodes. Though it will present an original storyline, the series aims to capture the spirit of the games and potentially draw more attention to other products within the Yakuza franchise.

When Gematsu reported on Sega's filing of the "Yakuza Wars" trademark, few were surprised. The trademark, registered in Japan on June 26, became public just yesterday.
